The Highway Code - Just how important of a read is it?

Unfortunately, learning to drive can cost upwards of £1,000. When you think about learning to drive with your instructor, you often think of the extremely high price tag, and whether or not it's worth it. However, one fundamentally important piece of learning apparatus is often ignored - the Highway Code. This little book can be picked up for as little as £2.50, and will give you over 140 pages of comprehensive information on learning to drive and understanding how the road system works in the United Kingdom. You will not only learn about all of the signs that are displayed on the UK roads, but also what you should do in certain situations, such as when it rains or snows. These little helpful pointers can prove extremely useful, especially when you're about to take your driving test.

The true reality is, when you go on your driving test, you're going to be tried and tested under numerous circumstances. Chances are, your driving instructor won't have taught you what every kind of sign means, or what they are there for. That is your responsibility. If you fail to follow a sign that is displayed on the road, you will unfortunately, fail your driving test. As such, keeping up-to-date on all of the signs is extremely useful when you're looking to start your driving career. The Highway Code has been written to help make you a better and safer driver - which is all that the driving examiner is looking for. They aren't looking for whether you can drive without stalling the car. Instead, their looking to see whether you'll pose a risk to other drivers who are on the road. If you're familiar with the Highway Code book, then you should be one of the safest drivers in the UK.

The importance of reading The Highway Code from day one

Going back to tests, the Highway Code is also used in the Theory part of your test. You will be expected to know what different signs mean, what to do in certain situations and who has priority of the road in certain situations. If you haven't bothered to read the Highway Code, then you'll struggle to pass your theory test - it's as simple as that. Not to mention, in terms of safety, numerous studies have concluded that drivers who read the Highway Code are less likely to have a fatal crash in their lifetime. You see, the Highway Code is about educating yourself to become a better and safer driver. The information contained within give you the knowledge you need to completely understand the road system, and understand why certain measures are in place.

Remember, even when you have passed your test, you should only ever consider your driving license as a privilege  It can be taken away from you in the blink of an eye. If you are caught speeding, the courts can decide to revoke your license immediately. Too many people jump into a car and fail to understand the consequences of driving quickly and recklessly. Luckily, a quick read through the Highway Code will quickly highlight just how important it is to be a safe driver. Not only will you understand the signs and measures in place, but you'll also understand WHY those measures are in place. You will understand the roads better, and you will become a better driver as a result.
